Acknowledging America's rich vaudeville tradition, Charlie Frye & Company synthesize virtuosic skills and a passionate love of their art into something classic yet undeniably fresh - something that astounds even as it entertains. For the last twenty-odd years (some odder than others), Charlie and his wife Sherry have been delighting audiences worldwide with their singular blend of silent comedy, magic, juggling, slapstick, and acrobatics. Together, they have thrilled audiences around the world in many exotic venues. Besides being one of the world’s most sought after American specialty acts, they are also in constant demand throughout the United States, where they were named Las Vegas’ Specialty Act of the Year for their star billing in the Follies Bergere. Charlie Frye’s first desire was to grow up to be Batman. But since that didn’t work out, he chose to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who were both clowns. Right away, he knew that he had some pretty big shoes to fill. For a short while, Charlie performed on the streets of New York City, laying the groundwork for an act that was soon to land them on the stages of Nevada’s top casinos. Shortly after arriving in Las Vegas, they became close friends with the legendary George Carl who was to become their most ardent supporter. Other inspiring friendships were soon to follow, and perhaps it is this connection to the greats of the past, and his close relationships to the best of today, that has enabled Charlie to become a variety artist of unmatched skill and mastery. Renowned throughout the world for the versatility of his talent, when it comes to combining world class juggling, sleight of hand, and physical comedy, no one does it better. Geoffrey Newton PRO writes: The Order of The Magi (Manchester) has been asked to point out that although Nick Barnes won both the cup and best card trick shield in this year’s Close-up Competition -which is unusual- it is not the first time this has been the case as in 2007 Ken Ashburn also took both prizes in the same competition. I may have given the impression on MagicWeek (30th June) that Nick was the first one to do this. I apologise to Ken. 14.7.12 "Abracadabra! Many readers will be familiar with Ian Rowland’s book ‘The Full Facts Book of Cold Reading’ which he first published all the way back in 1999. The book is still selling well, all around the world, and Ian has just published the fifth edition. “There was a bit of a disaster last year,” explains Ian, “when a printer went out of business and we lost all the plates used to reprint the book. I had to start over and re-create the entire book from scratch. I took the opportunity to completely revise the text, line by line, page by page, making lots of small corrections and updates. I also re-wrote a couple of chapters that I felt needed it. It’s the same book, but a better version of it. I also got new covers done and had them laminated for extra durability.” The book costs £20 and can only be ordered from the website Ian has set up for the purpose: www.thecoldreadingbook.com. 7.7.12 Advertisement Feature FISM 2012 - LIMITED OPPORTUNITY Blackpool Magicians' Club is pleased to announce that there are Daytime Registrations available at £60 per day. If you'd like to obtain a guest magician slot at Illusions Magic Bar Bristol we will need to see a showreel of you performing in the real world. Martin Duffy writes: Dani DaOrtiz combines superb technique with crazy humour. At only 30 years of age he is another of the great card workers that Spain has given the world, magicians like Arturo de Ascanio, Pepe Carroll and Juan Tamariz. Daniel Ortiz was born in Malaga in a town called Estepona. Like most magicians he began his own marathon of magic at 4 years of age thanks to a box of tricks given to him by his father. When he was 12, he visited the magic circle in Seville and experienced the magic of Mario the Magician who would later become his mentor. Later still he would associate with first class artists such as Juan Escolano, Mago Migue, Juan Tamariz, and even today Lennart Green. All played their part in influencing his approach to magic. Scott Land is a puppeteer at the top of his game. His seasoned performing skills are on display in nearly every scene of Paramount Pictures' Team America: World Police. Other screen credits include Disney's The Princess Diaries 2, for which he created and performed a Julie Andrews look-alike marionette, seen on the Special Features section of the DVD. His other TV and film credits include Pee Wee's Playhouse, The Ben Stiller Show, Still Breathing, Shakes the Clown and Rodney Dangerfield's Birthday Bash. Land has performed some 10,000 shows worldwide at theatres, convention centres, theme parks, corporate events and on cruise lines. Alan was too lazy to get a proper job so he became a magician. Was this a mistake ... it felt like that sometimes. Quirky illusions and hilarious tales from Alan's magical life, mainly about tricks going horribly wrong. From ITVs Fool Us, "We loved your act" Penn & Teller. "Very funny indeed. He's found a rich seam in digging at the ludicrous conventions of magic acts and as it turned out, his tricks were pretty good too." The Stage. "Warning: may contain LOLs, OMGs and WTFs.
