The Young Magicians Club entertained at The Magic Circle on Tuesday evening, putting on a show featuring both close-up and stage magic. Two performers really stood out. Thirteen year old Troy von Scheibner, close-up, (a real talent) whose infectious personality enchanted the whole audience, and fourteen year old Edd Crafer, on stage, whose mix of manipulation, body popping, and "knowing looks" to the audience was just right. Both these guys really connected with the audience - excellent. 6.4.02

Mac King has just released Tricks With Your Head : Hilarious Magic Tricks and Stunts to Disgust and Delight by Mac King and Mark Levy... this one is going to be very popular, available now from MagicWeek in association with Amazon.co.uk Click Here 6.4.02

Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold is also available from Amazon.co.uk by return. "The mysterious death of President Harding in 1923 is only the curtain raiser to this extraordinary novel of magic and science. Charles Carter is Carter the Great, a name given to him by the supreme showman, Harry Houdini. Carter was born into privilege but became a magician out of need. Only at the moment of the performance, when an audience is brought together by a single experience, can Carter defeat his crippling fear of loneliness. But with every step into the twentieth Century, the stakes are growing higher. Science and the cinema are fast out-stripping even the master magician and instead of that single magic moment, there is only a headlong rush into an uncertain future." David Blaine's appearance on South Park (Channel 4, Thursday) was just right... well it amused me anyway • There's actually a lot of live magic to be seen at the moment - keep an eye on What's On • "The Masked Magician" type exposure shows continue to be repeated in the UK, both on terrestrial and satellite TV. One way to stop them would be to apply pressure to the broadcasters via Equity. Magic organisations and individuals have no real clout, and nothing has really been tried in the UK anyway, but Equity could on behalf of its variety members apply real pressure. Just a thought • That's it for this week, your news, articles and reviews always welcomed. See you next week, Duncan. 6.4.02
