Number 524 - 10th July 2010

Is Anybody There? A bitter-sweet tale of an unusual friendship, starring Michael Caine as retired magician Clarence... Edward hates living in the old people's home run by his parents. His only interest is an obsession with ghosts, death and the afterlife. Until, that is, the arrival of reluctant new resident, Clarence - a retired magician with a liberating streak of anarchy. Together the odd couple overcome their personal drawbacks. Scott Penrose was the magic consultant. First showing on British television. 8pm on Saturday 17th July on BBC 2 (also in HD), see TV Magic. 10.7.10

Nathan Penlington presents 'Uri & Me' an obsessive deconstruction of the spoon-bending cultural icon that fuses stand-up, spoken word, and psychic ability: "Uri & Me looks behind the celebrity that we all know and love, to reveal the subtle, complex, mindful and caring man that has created an exhaustive series of board games, an impressive folding bike, a range of porcelain plates, over fourteen fiction and non-fiction books, a line of jewellery produced exclusively for QVC, a collection of psychically energised teddy bears, and a pop album. If you've never wondered what Uri has been up to since 1971, then this isn't the show for you." Venue: Etcetera Theatre, 265 Camden High Street, London, NW1 7BU (Map) at 9pm. Dates: 12th-14th August, All tickets: £7.50 via 08444 77 1000 or www.camdenfringe.org www.nathanpenlington.com. 10.7.10

MagicTao have just released Naked Mentalism 1 and 2. "After extensive testing by experienced performers, the wait is finally over. This book represents a new departure in the field of mentalism. The techniques it contains will enable you to perform impromptu, without the usual tools, techniques and compromises. You could, if you wish, perform naked to prove there’s no subterfuge. Track a spectator's thought process as she makes choices, harness psychological forces, turn misses into hits, perform book tests for complete strangers (even over the phone), but above all, replace the intuition of the psychic with solid models of the world that give hit rates far higher than the real thing can ever hope to achieve."
