Yu Ho Jin and Yann Frisch - Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques Grand Prix Winners, for stage and parlour magic, Blackpool, 2012. As predicted in MagicWeek just a few weeks ago, FISM 2012 produced arguably the finest set of competition winners for some 30 years. I had in mind Yu Ho Jin, Yann Frisch and Marko Karvo having seen them all live; add Marcel 'Prince of Illusions' to the equation, together with some of the other finalists, and the result was in fact a 'best-ever' FISM Championship. I would have loved to have seen the all-winners show but unfortunately I couldn't make it to the convention. Magic writer Walt Lees has forwarded his report written for the Blackpool Magicians' Club covering the convention events, but not the competitions which ran simultaneously Click Here. For a full list of all the competitors, together with their actual scores, Click Here. Photographs of the two Grand Prix champions © Daniel Eden/Eden Photography, used with permission (many thanks Dan), visit www.eden-photography.net then 'Proofing' and enter password FISMDAY1, FISMDAY2 etc. to see the entire collection. The next FISM World Championships of Magic will take place in Rimini, Italy, from 6th - 11th July 2015: www.fism.org. Please don't watch these winners on YouTube... wait until you can see their incredible acts as they should be seen... live. (DT). "Magicians spellbind competition judges" Click Here. International Magic Convention (November 16th, 17th, 18th at The Mermaid Theatre, London). The International Magic Convention is very pleased to announce that Joanie Spina will be joining them not only for a lecture at the weekend but also as one of the guest speakers on the previous Monday (November 12th) at the all-day seminar on Directions at The Bridewell Theatre. As principal performer, choreographer, and artistic consultant to David Copperfield for eleven years, Joanie Spina redressed the ancient art of magic with the flair and calibre of Broadway and Hollywood productions, and in association with David raised the stature of magic to new heights. Her regular column in Magic magazine is an unmissable read with advice that’s worth its weight in gold. During these two London appearances you will have the chance to see and hear Joanie as she explains and illustrates what it takes to raise your game. Jim Steinmeyer says "When it comes to secrets, Joanie Spina is the secret weapon behind some of the most successful magicians of our generation. As a consultant and director, she makes ordinary magic extraordinary, and turns good performances into great performances. There's no question about it, she's the magician that great magicians depend upon."

Noel Britten, co-organiser of the Convention said "the most exciting part of Joanie’s visit is that we will be able to offer personal and private artistic direction sessions with her in the week leading up to the Convention. You can take this rare opportunity to book a time slot with Joanie and receive her full attention as she works with any element of your performance that you desire. I strongly recommend that you visit her website www.joaniespina.com and read the plaudits that her work so richly deserves and then jump at this chance – I guarantee it will be money well-spent. Her attitude in development of an act or performance is nurturing and encouraging, and her warm and reassuring personality would make anyone feel comfortable enough to stretch themselves, take chances and improve their act beyond measure. I’ve seen her work with all types of performers from patter to silent, stage to close-up and all have benefitted from her advice and guidance." There are only a limited number of spaces available for this opportunity. Contact noelbritten@talk21.com to book your time slot. 21.7.12

Lennart Green One Day London Workshop, Sunday 23rd September. From the organisers: A one day interactive workshop with the great Lennart Green, one of the foremost magicians in the world today. His very unique style is entwined with cunning psychological techniques which leave the audience believing the impossible is happening before their very eyes. The workshop will take place from 10am to 5pm and will include performances, lectures, hands-on practice sessions, sessioning with Lennart in attendance to help out, and a Q&A session where your technical questions will be answered. This is a truly unique opportunity to learn some of the very best close-up card magic available anywhere. We would suggest that this workshop is not really suitable for complete beginners in card magic. We are determined to cram as much useful info into the day, and won’t have the time to explain basic handling techniques. A good basic knowledge of stock card sleights is all we ask. Places are limited to keep this event personal and allow everyone to get the most out of this fantastic day. Cost of the day is £80. Venue is the Ibis Hotel Euston, 3 Cardington Street, London NW1 2LW (Map) telephone 0207 3887777. A one minute walk from Euston Station. Plenty of parking on a Sunday. Tea and coffee charged at £5 per head for all day. For more info and to book visit magic52.net. 21.7.12

The show is a phenomenal way to see professional magicians and mentalists perform their No. 1 sets to a 'lay' audience and then have the opportunity to meet them afterwards. At the July show, we had to turn people away, so to avoid disappointment, book your tickets now!" The Pye's the limit! Geoffrey Newton IBM British Ring PRO writes: It is with great pleasure that I report that Northwest magician from Clitheroe John Pye has just been installed as the International President of The International Brotherhood of Magicians at their 2012 convention held in Norfolk Virginia USA. He is only the 4th British person to take this role in the society’s 90 year history. Achieving this accolade of a worldwide organisation must be the ultimate outer limit of success for any magician. John has worked hard for the art of magic for many years now so this is a well deserved honour to recognise his efforts. He still remains Secretary to the IBM British Ring and been president of the British Ring in 1995. He was Secretary to the Northern Magic Circle for 13 years. This local man who has never lived more than 10 miles from where he was born is now about to take on a global year travelling to represent the IBM at many Ring conventions throughout the world. It’s therefore bon voyage John wherever your wand takes you and I look forward to reporting on your travels over the next 12 months. 21.7.12

Bexley Magic Society’s Magic to Music competition. Wednesday 18th July saw the latest in Bexley Magic Society’s Magic to Music competition. Three contestants, David Klass, Rob Page and Joe Greenaway had all been given different pieces of music a few weeks earlier. They then had to come up with magic routines to perform in front of an audience of their peers and lay people. Only club members were allowed to mark the acts. This year the winner was David Klass (pictured) who performed Jon Allen’s Silent Treatment, Billy McComb’s Blendo Sucker Silk and a lovely version of the Gypsy Thread. Also providing entertainment on the night (but not competing) were past winners, Megan Knowles Bacon, club secretary Dave Andrews and club president Roy Marsh. The evening was compèred by club chairman, Kevin Doig. Congratulations to David; commiserations to the other acts...next year maybe. Roy Marsh. 21.7.12
