Dani DaOrtiz, Christian Engblom and Miguel Angel Gea to appear at the International Magic Convention in November. From the organisers: Following last week's announcement of the special extra event at the International Magic Convention on Saturday 16th November (An Evening of Bar Magic) we are thrilled to announce that just three of the many magicians performing at this event will be Dani DaOrtiz (photo), Christian Engblom and Miguel Angel Gea. Together the trio, known affectionately as The Fat Brothers, who have two phenomenal group DVDs alongside their own personal products, will be making their first combined UK Convention appearance. The format of the evening will be not only the Bar Magic session at the Press House Wine Bar featuring the above trio along with a number of other close-up mix'n'mingle, table and bar top magicians and other performers, but also a special cabaret style performance by other artistes next door at The Bridewell Theatre.

We promise a full evening of amazement, wonder and laughter starting at 7.30pm that not only will you love, but will also be a wonderful evening for your friends, partners and spouses to see some of the world's best magical artists in two of London's most convivial and atmospheric venues. This event will run at the same time as the Saturday Gala Show - but don't worry, the Gala Show is repeated in its entirety on the Sunday evening too, so you can catch it then! Our scheduling of the Convention allows you to see all the events - no need to ultimately have to choose between one event or another and miss the opportunity to see anything or anyone during the course of the Convention. Tickets available as always via www.internationalmagic.com. 6.7.13

Magic triumphs at 'Britain Does Variety 2013'. Recent Magic Circle Young Magician of the Year winner Sebastian Walton, who so impressed us back in April when he took that title, was placed second at Britain Does Variety 2013 (Watford Palace Theatre, June 22nd) coming in just one point behind winner David Penn (reported last week). Sebastian presented the same material as in his Young Magician of the Year act, but with additional guidance from magician Matthew Wright. Sebastian's charisma and cheeky delivery was electric on the night, with the audience really warming to the sparks that went flying! Twenty seven acts featured in the final, including comedians, bands, dancers, acrobats and singers. Piff the Magic Dragon was the special guest as the judges deliberated and was excellent as ever, making it a great night overall for magic. Many congratulations to Seb, he has that comic 'magic ingredient' that only appears once in a magic generation (Daniels and Dobson). DT. www.sebastianwaltonmagic.com. 6.7.13

Historic Escapology Event at Southend on Sea's Adventure Island Fun Park - 14th September. Escapologist Stuart Burrell (above) will attempt to complete a quadruple set of escapes at Adventure Island Fun Park in his home town of Southend-on-Sea, Essex as part of the “Escape for Life” series. The Escapes themselves are both historic and ground-breaking and include an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the most handcuffs unlocked in one minute, a recreation of a chair escape performed by Harry Houdini himself when he visited and performed in Southend on Sea in 1911, an escape from a regulation medical Straitjacket whilst riding inside one of the cars of the big wheel and the first attempt in over twenty five years to escape from restraints whilst riding a rollercoaster which has a full vertical loop! Harry Houdini performed at the Hippodrome Theatre in Southend on Sea and also at a private function at the Alexander Yacht Club where he performed a Chair Escape for the members. He performed between the 27th of March and the 1st of April 1911. It remains his only performance in Essex throughout his career. The Strait Jacket being used is manufactured by Posey (www.posey.com) an American based Medical Restraint and equipment manufacturer established in 1937. The jacket in question meets the regulation requirements of the verification committee of Guinness World Records. The jacket has not been modified and requires a different escape method to the ones commonly associated with strait jackets. The escapes will take place from 5.30pm on Saturday 14th December. Adventure Island is the UK's leading 'Free to Enter' Fun Park and is located on Western Esplanade, on the Sea Front, in Southend on Sea. www.adventureisland.co.uk. 6.7.13
