Watch and Objective plan to take magic to the ‘next level’. Watch is to return to magic with its latest original commission The Happenings, from Derren Brown-producer Objective Productions. The Happenings is a 4 x 60 minute factual entertainment format for the UKTV pay channel starring Barry and Stuart from BBC1 series The Magicians. It will follow the duo as they attempt to persuade unsuspecting residents of towns across the UK and US to believe the unbelievable. One audacious stunt will include trying to convince an entire town that they have been abducted by aliens. The series is produced by Objective and Crook Productions, the indie run by Objective head of entertainment Matt Crook. It was commissioned by UKTV’s Richard Watsham, who will exec produce along with Crook and Objective’s Andrew Newman. The order follows the channel’s success with Dynamo: Magician Impossible, produced by Phil McIntyre Productions. “We’re taking magic to the next level,” said UKTV controller Emma Tennant. “We’ve set the bar once with Dynamo: Magician Impossible and now we’re resetting it.” “It’s always exciting to bring a big, new, ambitious idea to Watch and push magic in an interesting and new direction,” added Crook. The show is set to air in December. The commission underlines the growing strength of the magic genre, with both Channel 4 and Discovery hunting for new ideas following Zig Zag’s Troy and Objective’s Breaking Magic for the respective broadcasters. “You were nobody at Mipcom if you didn’t have a magician in your back pocket,” said Tennant. 9.11.13

Karl Hein lecture tour now booking. Steve Gore writes: Karl Hein, aka Karl Koppertop is an American magician who, although has done many lecture tours throughout Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Asia and the US, has never lectured in the UK. That's all about to change around this time next year when he'll be here, in the UK. Karl Hein is known all over the world for his amazing card handling abilities and his naturally disarming performance style. He has authored many instructional DVDs including “The Heinstein Shuffle”, “Heiny 500”, “Heinstein’s Dream”, “Hein’s Catch Up” and “The Heinous Collection”. If you are looking for original and entertaining routines developed by an experienced professional magician then this lecture is for you. Karl will use these routines to teach sleights, flourishes and principles of magic and misdirection that both beginners and seasoned professionals can appreciate. More importantly, you will learn how to 'go with the flow' as Karl explains how to change his routines depending on your skill level, audience and performing conditions. "Of all the new faces I’ve met in the past 15 years, Karl Hein stands out as being one of the few magicians that I just know will be a huge success. It is rare for a magician to not only understand technique, but also entertainment and business. I feel comfortable booking Karl anytime and anywhere. I highly recommend his lecture!" Bill Malone. Following on from his recent success in the British Ring Stage Competition at the IBM convention in Buxton in September, Oliver is now presenting his lecture 'Stage Magic - Perceptions on Principles and Psychology' at clubs around the UK. The lecture mainly covers stage magic with an introduction into how the techniques, psychology and rules followed by stage manipulators can easily be applied to all performance situations in magic; from cabaret to close-up and from parlour to children's shows. Oliver offers effects for close-up, comedy, stage and children's magic, and also demonstrates how to produce a dove. Throughout the explanations, he illustrates how to make performances more powerful by applying rules of stagecraft, how to deconstruct a routine or act whilst eliminating any unnecessary movements and actions, and how to give your magic more of an impact in general. For full details, email info@olivertabor.com. Oliver's lecture details can also be found on the MagicWeek Lecturers page. Oliver lectures on Thursday 14th November at the Sussex Magic Circle and on Monday 18th November at the Leicester Magic Circle. 9.11.13

Comedy magic double act Carl & Dave, had another great review in The Stage last week: "Closing out the first half of the evening was a comedy magic act called Carl & Dave. This is to all intents and purposes a prop comedy show with a magical twist, but there was one big difference. The lads presented their show as modern comedy and this could prove the key to their success. Carl & Dave is exactly the type of act we should be seeing guesting on television shows, but rarely do. In short, I just loved these guys." Mark Richie The Stage. www.carlanddave.com. 9.11.13
