The Bexley Magic Society will be hosting a lecture by Robert Teszka on Wednesday, 2nd September. Roy Marsh writes: Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Visiting magicians are very welcome at £10 on the door and our club details can be found here: www.bexleymagic.org.uk. His lecture is called, "Now You See It, Now You Don’t: The Psychology of Magic". Robert is a cognitive psychology researcher, science promoter, and consultant, as well as a member of The Magic Circle in London. His research uses the techniques of conjurors to understand how people perceive their environment, make decisions, and interact with each other. Robert has given talks on some of the more surprising findings in psychology for CFI Vancouver & London, Neuroscience Week in Barcelona, and the Market Research Society. He has worked as a consultant on magic, games, and other psychological topics for creative and market research agencies in New York and England. Robert's captivating talks inform the audience about how our own minds deceive us as readily as any magician, and how magician's tricks can help us understand our minds a bit better. Expect a curated collection of demonstrations, experiments, and original research, and perhaps a magic trick or two, as Robert attempts to convince you that sometimes, you just can't trust your own mind. 29.8.15

Yogano levitations. Christian Glenwright writes: I have been in the amazing world of magic as a stage performer for many years. Over time I have also become an experienced builder of unique electronic props and illusions. Some years ago I was fortunate to be invited to meet Yogano, the world famous French illusion builder, at his home in France. Since then, the sessions with my good friend Yogano have inspired me to promote the longevity of his amazing illusions and I have benefitted greatly from his expertise. Two years ago he allowed me to purchase the rights to officially and exclusively, build Yogano levitations. I feel it is a great honour to carry on this wonderful tradition in his name. bespokemagic.propsandeffects@xlnmail.com. 29.8.15

UK Escape Artist Riley successfully escapes from cell No.1 at Ripon Police museum. On August 15th 2015, UK Escape Artist Riley successfully escaped from cell No.1 at Ripon Police museum. Riley was contacted via the United Kingdom Escape Artists (U.K.E.A), by Rebecca Taylor who is the daughter of David De-Val. She put up a challenge to escape from the very cell her father managed to emancipate himself from back in 1983 after declaring that he had worked out Houdini's method of escaping from jail cells. In July of 1983, De-Val was successful and proved he really had worked out Houdini's secret.

At 12 noon the time had come for Riley to attempt the challenge Rebecca had set. The cell was thoroughly searched and a full strip search was then performed by Dr Derek Jeary to make sure Riley had nothing concealed that could aid his escape. Rebecca provided the locks and restraints, these were checked by the Museum staff, the Doctor and a member of the public. After everyone agreed they were happy Riley was positioned for the escape attempt, his arms and legs through the iron bars, handcuffs and leg irons attached.

The public were at the end of the corridor along with a video camera to ensure that the door was securely locked and no other person was present. The stopwatch started. Whilst waiting in suspense, Rebecca Taylor gave the guests a talk on the history of the cell and spoke about her father David De-Val escaping from the cell. After 3 minutes, 16 seconds all were all amazed when Riley arrived at the main entrance behind all the guests, not only had he escaped from Cell No 1, but he had also managed to get through three further doors and outside the building at the main entrance, behind all the waiting public!

Steve Beam May-June 2016 lecture tour now booking. Tony Griffith will be organising a lecture tour for Steve Beam www.stevebeam.com in 2016 (3rd May – 10th June), and writes: This will be Steve’s fifth lecture tour of these islands. Each of the previous tours have been a great success. Steve will be travelling on a systematic route around the country; from London along the M4 to the West Country, then north on the M5/M6 to Scotland and then back to London on the A1(M)/M1 network As he travels he will be popping off the motorway system to take in lectures and on the way is hoping to be able to pop over to Ireland for a few days to lecture there.

Due to the systematic nature of his route it may not always be possible to accommodate a club on their usual club night, although every effort will be made to do so. Steve Beam is certainly one of the top card magicians in the world, and definitely one of the most entertaining. His humour and professionalism comes across very strongly. Steve is the author of numerous publications, notably 'The Semi Automatic Card Trick' series. The first eight volumes of this tremendous collection of great card magic are shortly to be joined by volumes 9 and 10. Previously Steve was the editor of The Trap Door magazine, which is now available in three superb bound volumes. Clubs wishing to book Steve’s lecture should email tony@tonygriffith.co.uk or call 01275 835463. Early booking is advised as the previous four tours have sold out very quickly.
