Kevin Quantum: Illuminations. CatFace Talent Presents the brand new show from 2015 sell-out, award winning magician, and Artistic Director of the Edinburgh International Magic Festival; Kevin Quantum (formerly Kevin McMahon). After a sell out show last year, Kevin Quantum returns to the Edinburgh Festival with his new offering ‘Illuminations’ at the Gilded Balloon’s Debating Hall. Ten years ago, unassuming scientist Kevin paused his Physics PhD to become a magician, being tutored by none other than magic royalty Penn & Teller. Kevin has thrived in this field, applying a rigour to the world of mystery with fascinating results. A decade on and still a conjuror, Kevin shoots magic into the 21st century by illustrating scientific principles so amazing you need to turn to magic to express them live. This show is inspired by light; our relationships with it, the thoughts and feelings light can evoke and the wondrous sights which can be created before our eyes. ‘Illuminations’ is the exotic space where science ends and magic begins. Each day, Kevin will showcase stunning light-based illusions including creating fire in the palm of his hands, recreating a will-o-the-wisp, (for the first time at the Fringe), flying this glowing ball of light above the heads of the audience and, (for the first time ever), the creation of a rainbow live on stage. Kevin Quantum has designed state of the art magic and fused it with incredible science. In turn, he has created some extraordinary results.

As magic creatures go, Kevin fits somewhere between Gandalf and Brian Cox and is the closest thing to real magic a believer, or a cynic will ever find at the Fringe. “Epic stunts, genuinely impressive magic” Broadway Baby. Venue: Gilded Balloon, Debating Hall. Dates: 3rd-29th August (Not 4th, or 22nd) Previews 3rd & 5th August. Time: 4.30pm. Age Range: PG. www.quantummagician.com. 23.7.16

Review of Sean Lobban's 'Tall Tale' lecture. David Miller writes: If Magic Clubs are looking for a Club lecture that's a little bit different to the norm, Northamptonshire Magicians Club would refer you to Sean Lobban's Tall Tale Lecture that they enjoyed recently. You won't learn a lot of new tricks or routines at this lecture, although Sean does demonstrate 2 or 3 of his original effects. What you will get however, is a very entertaining evening giving your membership an opportunity to discuss or dispute Sean's sincerely held views and opinions on various aspects of what working magicians should consider about their performance. Make no mistake, the evening can, and probably will, get quite controversial, but in a very healthy way - and we can guarantee that Sean's lecture will give your membership plenty to think about.
