Unavoidable Destiny

Musing on the possibility that destiny may play a part in our lives, the magician offers to try and prove that it does exist. A card is chosen by three spectators totally freely selecting a colour, then a suit and finally a number. We’ll imagine the card arrived at is the 7H. Removing a blue backed deck of cards* the magician explains that earlier that evening he took a RED backed pack and shuffled it (to illustrate the performer then shuffles the blue deck he is holding), turned the cards face up and spread them (he turns the blue deck face up and spreads them to further illustrate) and got his wife to select any card. The card that she took he then slipped into this blue deck so that he wouldn’t lose it. He offers to find it.

Turning the blue deck face down the performer runs through the cards until he comes to a red backed card which is slipped to the top of the deck. He runs through the whole deck to clearly show that there is only one red backed card in it. Amazingly, when that red backed card is turned over, it is the 7H!

No rough and smooth, absolutely no force of selected card, and the re-set can be done in a few moments in front of the spectators if you wish, all this goes to make Unavoidable Destiny a great way to do the Brainwave Deck effect. Imagine offering your spectator the chance to select themselves a 'lucky card', which they do - say it is the Five Of Diamonds. You comment that while that is not a bad card, you have a REALLY good one that you keep on you at all times, attached to your keyring. It is trapped between two blank cards to ensure that nothing can happen to it. There are clearly only three cards on the keyring.

You then cleanly display your lucky card - say the Jack Of Spades. In a sudden display of goodwill, you offer to exchange lucky cards with the spectator, as you know your one is so good. Suddenly the Jack on your keyring CHANGES into the spectator's Five Of Diamonds. Again, there are clearly ONLY THREE CARDS on the Keyring - the double blanks and the spectator's selection. It looks cleaner than a soap-sudded gleaming thing with no grubby bits!

Calling attention back to what the spectator believed to be their selection, they now see a small hole has appeared through the corner. That is because, when they turn it over, they find it is the JACK OF SPADES, fresh off your keyring.

The Ace Detective Coin

A card is freely selected and signed and then returned to the deck, which is then shuffled and placed back into the card case. The magician states that he is not going to attempt to find their missing card but has hired a detective instead. A two pence piece then appears out of nowhere, which he claims is ‘The Detective Coin’... “It’s a copper!” (Ha, Ha). The coin is placed on top of the card case in full view...“Its on the case!” (more laughs) Then with just a wave of the hand the COIN VANISHES IN AN INSTANT without the magician even so much as touching it! Exorcism

What a great prop, your very own witch’s cauldron and a spooky effect to go with it too.

You perform a ‘remote’ exorcism on the owner of the cauldron and manage to cast out The Devil card from a deck of major arcana tarot cards. Coupled with the visual effect of a surprising flash from the cauldron as you dispose of the flaming embers of the scroll, this adds up to a very nice set piece indeed.

Your spectator examines the deck of tarot cards and then mixes them up. They place them face down on the table and after the exorcism ritual is read aloud they remove the top card of the tarot deck, only to find that it is The Devil card that they have ‘cast out’.

Al Mann Lecture DVD

This DVD is a live recorded lecture Al Mann gave in Vienna, Austria, at the 1. Wiener Zaubertheater, on November 25th 1984. To my knowledge this is the only DVD available today showing Al Mann in action. The quality is remarkably good for a live unscripted recording from a single camera from the 80s. It runs for a bit over 1 hour and 40 minutes.

It is a wonderful video to watch and see Al in action, as well as pick up a number of tips and several excellent routines. He also explains a fantastic card force developed by Robert Parrish. This force is so fair and completely absent of any sleight-of-hand, that the knowledge of this alone is worth the entire DVD. Of course, this is just one little bit you are getting. Al shows two effects with his DiploMental pouch, several billet tests and two card tricks.

The second half of the lecture is performance only, where Al demonstrates the Lexicon Phenomenon, Master Slate Deluxe, and a symbol prediction. This is followed by a longer Q&A section which reveals quite a bit more in terms of inside mentalism knowledge.

Al Mann gives the lecture in English and a translator translates everything into German. Al says a few sentences, then the translator translates them, then Al says more etc. I spotted a few minor errors in the translation, but they should not prevent any German speaker to not understand the instructions and explanations. The DVD menu is bilingual. The only piece only in German is the introduction by Kaldy-Karo and the final thanks again by Karo. This means this DVD is usable for both English and German speakers.

My sincere thanks to the 1. Wiener Zaubertheater, of which I am a proud member, for making this recording available and allowing me to offer it for sale.

Clone Coin by Mark Lee

This is a super clean 'Special' coin that can be shown clearly as a regular coin. There are two effects included, but once you see the ingenuity of the coin, there are many more possibilities. Effect one, is a simple coins across in your hands effect. You start off by displaying two coins openly, there is obviously nothing else in your hands. You place the two coins, one at a time, and very cleanly, from your right hand to the left. You now pick the two coins up with your right hand, and display them. They are then thrown one at a time into your left hand (you can even hear them clinking), and you grip them, making a fist with both hands. You make a magical gesture, and although your hands never come anywhere near each other, you can now show that you have one coin in each hand! Effect two, is a coin matrix effect. Using four coins, which are shown and counted, and two regular playing cards, borrowed if you wish. The coins are spread out in to a square formation. Two of the coins are now covered by the playing cards. When one is lifted, a coin has gone, and when the other card is lifted there are now two coins under it. This is repeated, until all the coins are now under one card! You can now show you have only two cards and four coins! Taking the deck of cards, the magician explains that on the backs of the cards are written the numbers 1-52 in a random order. He now searches through the faces of the cards and removes the spectator's thought of card, turning the deck over and searching through the backs, he then finds the card with the spectator's thought of number on it. On the reverse of the spectators thought of card is the number the magician predicted. And on the face of the card with the thought of number is the very playing card he predicted.

Remember…
Only one deck is used - which is on view BEFORE the trick commences.

Tri-Color Nightmare Plus

From Gay Ljungberg: This is my best trick! I invented it in 1984 and has sold many, many hundreds over the years, it is always a hit at magic conventions. I have liking for doing "ungimmicked versions" of tricks, that are normally performed using gimmicks. This one of those.

Two effects:
PROFESSORS NIGHTMARE IN COLOR
You show thre unequal ropes, one is red, one is blue and one is yellow, counting them from hand to hand. With one simple tug, you make the ropes equal!

LINKING ROPES
Two spectators each choose a rope and you take the remaining one and you all tie a knot in the rope making a circle, a ring of rope. You gather the three rope rings in your and try to pull them a part, but they are linked to each other! The ropes are real, the knots are real and everything can be examined.
No magnets, no extra pieces of rope, NO GIMMICKS! Only knowledge is used. You receive three ropes in different colours, an illustrated instruction PLUS a dvd showing the effect and in detail, step by step, teaching you how to setup and perform the effect.

Bonus effect: ORDER OF YOUR THOUGHT
The spectator may tie the ropes in any order he likes, formig a long rope. You have a red handkerchief visible in your breast pocket. What a pickle! Here’s a young man, eager to set off to wizard school, but he’s missing something. Can you guess what it is? That’s right! A hat. His Mum offers to help him, as she’s got a trunk in the attic with all sorts of hats, but things go from bad to worse, as you can see!

In desperation, our young hero asks to go to the Hat Shop. You display a folder, which represents the Hat Shop, and the children can see a picture in the open window.

The shopkeeper tells the young wizard that he only has one hat left, but he thinks it will be perfect. The young wizard is not so sure! There are no other hats in the shop, as you prove by peering through the window, but the children help with a magic spell, and another hat appears in the window. Better still, it’s a wizard’s hat! - but it’s far too big! More magic happens and as you can see from the happy boy wizard, everything comes out right!

Stunning artwork, dazzling colours and a brilliant, highly topical plot all add up to make this one of the best new children’s tricks for a long time.
