Al Mann Lecture DVD

This DVD is a live recorded lecture Al Mann gave in Vienna, Austria, at the 1. Wiener Zaubertheater, on November 25th 1984. To my knowledge this is the only DVD available today showing Al Mann in action. The quality is remarkably good for a live unscripted recording from a single camera from the 80s. It runs for a bit over 1 hour and 40 minutes.

It is a wonderful video to watch and see Al in action, as well as pick up a number of tips and several excellent routines. He also explains a fantastic card force developed by Robert Parrish. This force is so fair and completely absent of any sleight-of-hand, that the knowledge of this alone is worth the entire DVD. Of course, this is just one little bit you are getting. Al shows two effects with his DiploMental pouch, several billet tests and two card tricks.

The second half of the lecture is performance only, where Al demonstrates the Lexicon Phenomenon, Master Slate Deluxe, and a symbol prediction. This is followed by a longer Q&A section which reveals quite a bit more in terms of inside mentalism knowledge.

Al Mann gives the lecture in English and a translator translates everything into German. Al says a few sentences, then the translator translates them, then Al says more etc. I spotted a few minor errors in the translation, but they should not prevent any German speaker to not understand the instructions and explanations. The DVD menu is bilingual. The only piece only in German is the introduction by Kaldy-Karo and the final thanks again by Karo. This means this DVD is usable for both English and German speakers.

Double Your Money by Eric Bailey

Magic with money is always cool, especially on the street!

The magician shows a small black paddle encircled with three elastic bands. This we are told is used in a fascinating quiz. A spectator is asked to bet 20p. A question is asked. If they get the answer right they ‘double their money’. The paddle is shown empty on both sides and the 20p is slipped under the top elastic band. A very simple question is asked, which the spectator duly answers correctly. The paddle is turned over and a second 20p is now seen to have appeared under the elastic band at the rear of the paddle. They have doubled their money.

This is repeated twice more so that the spectator’s 3 20p’s have doubled into 6. All six coins are removed from the paddle. Three of the coins are returned to the paddle and the Jackpot question asked. The spectator fails to answer the question correctly. The magician flicks the paddle and a £20 note appears. The spectator gets their 3 20p’s back but the magician wins the Jackpot Prize!

Let burning candles levitate!

The magician hands a large metal ring (of approx. 18"/ 45cm in diameter) to the audience for inspection. His hands are empty. A spectator puts an object of his choice on the table. Holding the ring with both hands, the performer moves it over the object, then lifts the ring. As the ring is lifted, the object is rising along with it, floating in the centre of the ring. The magician can turn the ring in any direction he wishes; holding it by his mere fingertips, he can even turn the ring around the object - the object is floating freely in the air!

Note that the magician's hands are always empty! He doesn't pick up any aids, so he doesn't have to secretly put any away! He can float any object as often as he likes (and, of course, not only things borrowed from the audience, but also anything of his own, such as a large ball, a glass, a bottle with liquid - in other words, anything that isn't very heavy). The ring and the objects are completely unprepared, and can be examined at any time! No wires, ring pullers, magnets or that sort of thing! THE DUFFIE DIARY TRICK

You begin by shuffling a deck and placing it on the table. You never touch the deck again. You now give the spectator your pocket diary which he may examine before placing it in his pocket. You never touch the diary again.

The spectator will now create a random date. He cuts the deck – this is a free cut – and turns over the card cut to. The value of this card will represent the month. This can truly be any value. He counts the cards that he cut – this will represent the day. This can truly be any quantity so long as it doesn’t exceed the number of possible days in a month. You can even offer him the chance to change his mind and do it again. It will not make any difference to the outcome. The trick cannot fail.

Maybe he cut to a Four spot – the fourth month is April. Maybe the number of cards he cut is 15. That is APRIL 15th. The spectator opens the diary at April 15 and reads out what is written against that date. You explain that the diary will tell him about his lucky card.

The diary might say, “21 DOWN!” But this is not a bizarre crossword puzzle. The diary is telling him where to find his LUCKY CARD. He counts to the 21st card in the deck. This card may be the AS. Finally you ask him to look at the back of the diary where he finds a card. Written on this card is “YOUR LUCKY CARD IS THE ACE OF SPADES.”

The Walkabout Coins Routine

Those customers who already own a set of our beautiful Colour Coins will hopefully not need convincing that they are fabulous props to work with. Now I can offer a new walkabout routine using some of the coins from that set.

Two coins, one red and the other yellow are examined. The yellow is closed in the performer’s fist, the red is openly placed into his pocket. Instantly they change places!

This is repeated, this time with the yellow coin held in a spectator’s hand. Then in the final stage, the yellow vanishes from the magician’s hand and joins the red in his pocket, and now in his hand is a green coin!

Carefully worked out for maximum impact, some sleight of hand is required, although nothing very difficult. There is no re-set required.

Because of the bright colours on these coins they show up very well in all lighting conditions and so the magical changes caused by the coins swapping places become easier for the spectators to see and follow.

Clone Coin by Mark Lee

This is a super clean 'Special' coin that can be shown clearly as a regular coin. There are two effects included, but once you see the ingenuity of the coin, there are many more possibilities. Effect one, is a simple coins across in your hands effect. You start off by displaying two coins openly, there is obviously nothing else in your hands. You place the two coins, one at a time, and very cleanly, from your right hand to the left. You now pick the two coins up with your right hand, and display them. They are then thrown one at a time into your left hand (you can even hear them clinking), and you grip them, making a fist with both hands. You make a magical gesture, and although your hands never come anywhere near each other, you can now show that you have one coin in each hand! Effect two, is a coin matrix effect. Using four coins, which are shown and counted, and two regular playing cards, borrowed if you wish. The coins are spread out in to a square formation. After placing a deck of cards on the table the Magician asks a spectator to THINK of both a number between 1-52 and any one of the 52 playing cards in a deck but not say anything yet! Then in full view writes two predictions on the reverse of his business card, a number and a playing card… Only now does the spectator tell him what number and card they were thinking of and these are then written under the magicians predictions. Taking the deck of cards, the magician explains that on the backs of the cards are written the numbers 1-52 in a random order. He now searches through the faces of the cards and removes the spectator's thought of card, turning the deck over and searching through the backs, he then finds the card with the spectator's thought of number on it. On the reverse of the spectators thought of card is the number the magician predicted. And on the face of the card with the thought of number is the very playing card he predicted.

Tri-Color Nightmare Plus

From Gay Ljungberg: This is my best trick! I invented it in 1984 and has sold many, many hundreds over the years, it is always a hit at magic conventions. I have liking for doing "ungimmicked versions" of tricks, that are normally performed using gimmicks. This one of those.

Two effects:
PROFESSORS NIGHTMARE IN COLOR
You show thre unequal ropes, one is red, one is blue and one is yellow, counting them from hand to hand. With one simple tug, you make the ropes equal!

LINKING ROPES
Two spectators each choose a rope and you take the remaining one and you all tie a knot in the rope making a circle, a ring of rope. You gather the three rope rings in your and try to pull them a part, but they are linked to each other! The ropes are real, the knots are real and everything can be examined.
No magnets, no extra pieces of rope, NO GIMMICKS! Only knowledge is used. You receive three ropes in different colours, an illustrated instruction PLUS a dvd showing the effect and in detail, step by step, teaching you how to setup and perform the effect.

Bonus effect: ORDER OF YOUR THOUGHT
The spectator may tie the ropes in any order he likes, formig a long rope. You have a red handkerchief visible in your breast pocket. You pull out the handkerchief and there are two more handkerchiefs, all three in the same colours as the ropes, and tied to each other in the same order as the ropes. For this bonus effect you can use your own silks (not included).

There are no other hats in the shop, as you prove by peering through the window, but the children help with a magic spell, and another hat appears in the window.
