Harrogate Society of Magicians On Monday, 18 January, we held our first meeting of 2010. As well as some good magic, we heard via email from Clive Cullum, who, while visiting family in Australia, had popped into the Sydney Ring. On 27 January, we held our annual dinner at Dr B s restaurant in Harrogate. Guests of honour were Shirley Ray, President of the British Ring, and her husband, Dave Cass, the British Ring convention s musical director. With a full turn-out of members and partners, there was magic at the tables and press coverage, too. A terrific start to the year. www.harrogatesocietyofmagicians.com Submitted by: James Ward 27.1.10

North Western Society of Magicians
NWSM celebrated with their
annual dinner and cabaret last week. Around 120 members and guests
enjoyed an excellent 5 course meal at their HQ hotel, The Lisdoonie in
Barrow in Furness, followed by speeches from this year's president
Richie Cottam, Garry Dunn, and Hairy Biker Dave Myers who told us of his
days when he worked in the makeup department of the BBC, when he had to
do makeup on Debbie McGee straight after 'touching up' a rather 'messy'
elephant. Submitted by: Jacqui Little 16.11.09

Stuart Broadbank performed close-up magic in the interval, while Neil Bradley-Smith filmed the show. Later this month, we ll be performing at Ripley Town Hall in aid of the Roddy Scott Foundation. Harrogate Society of Magicians On 21 September, Rex Stott enthralled us with his contribution to our series, This Is My Life . Magic aside, we learned that Rex is a jazz musician and a seasoned speaker on the WI circuit. The talk was peppered with magic, photographs and amusing anecdotes. Our theme for the evening Escapology had Brian Le Slie escaping from both a straitjacket and mail sack, while Bob McBratney contributed an hilarious routine in which, while supposedly securely handcuffed, he was able to physically direct his helper around the stage. Stevie B and David Hird added to the fun. Another great evening. www.harrogatesocietyofmagicians.com Submitted by: James Ward 25.9.09

Harrogate Society of Magicians On 17 August, another well-attended meeting saw newsletter editor, Neil Bradley-Smith, give the latest talk in our series, This Is My Life , the highlight of which was a fascinating insight into his time as a circus illusionist. Magic aside, we learned that Neil can water ski and is a trained horseriding instructor. New members, Stuart and Adrian, passed their auditions with entertaining routines. With the rest of the evening devoted to the theme, flowers , we learned how to fashion napkin roses (with mixed results), and produce colourful displays from several locations, while, predictably, flour also featured in a big way! www.harrogatesocietyofmagicians.com Submitted by: James Ward 27.8.09

Merlin Magical Society Just a line to say how much I enjoyed the lecture, "It's Just a Gimmick" by Ali Cardabra (Paul Buonocore) at the Merlin Magic Society that was advertised on Magic Week. It certainly proved to be an both an unmissable and worthwhile event. Unlike many lectures today it was not an extended sales pitch but a well explained lecture that used cards, coins, and rope. There really was something for everyone as childrens magic, adult close up, walkaround and cabaret effects were clearly explained. I even saw Chief Inspector Clouseau, as played by Peter Sellers, make a live appearance during a mentalism effect.if you have the opportunity to see this make certain to do yourself a big favour and attend you will not regret it. www.merlinmagicalsociety.co.uk Submitted by: Michael Chandler 15.6..09
