Tony Russell
Remembered by Jack Delvin, President of The Magic
Circle
Regretfully
we have lost another great character from the magic scene. Tony had an
interesting and varied life.
He loved magic from an early age. Despite a fervent wish to be a full time
magician he initially earned his living by running two or three hairdressing
salons in London.
Then, in the late 60’s or early 70’s, he decided to move to Basingstoke where he
created a very successful office cleaning business, which encompassed contracts
with companies like Boots.
His private life was no less busy. He was married more than once and fathered
six children who live all around the world.
On retirement he, together with his lovely wife, Jane, started Pennywise Magic.
Jane is Chinese and through that connection Tony was able to offer the cheapest
silks to the fraternity.
Tony was also a MOBster. No, not a gangster type mobster; a member of the
Magicians of Basingstoke magic society. A very active and successful club of
which I am proud, alongside Fay Presto, to be an honorary member.
Tony worked long and hard for the MOB in various capacities including Hon.
Secretary and finally President.
I shall always remember Tony for his twinkling eyes, his total dedication to
anything that he took on; and his ready willingness to help his fellow man and
woman in any way he could.
Bless you Tony and thank you for all the laughs we shared.
