Houdini-themed open afternoon - The Modern Mystic League, Blackburn

Brian Lead writes: Roger Woods, Chairman of the Modern Mystic League (Blackburn), extends a warm welcome for a Houdini-themed open afternoon on Sunday, 12th July, to commemorate the centenary of the Great Escaper's death in 1926.

There will be a new talk by Prof Peter Haddad on Houdini's life from a psychological perspective, along with a number of Houdini-related tricks and entertainment. In addition, Roger will be displaying items from his collection and presenting a virtual tour of The House of Houdini in Budapest which he has recently visited, reprising a talk given at this year's Magic Circle History Day.

Nine effects including rapid calculations, predictions, forces, Gilbreath and a memory effect requiring no memory work. When you know their mechanics, you can easily adapt and expand the tricks in new and interesting ways, which would otherwise be impossible.

This event will take place from 8pm-10pm in our club room located just a five-minute walk from Northfields tube station on the Piccadilly Line. There is a £10 charge on the door for visitors. From Allan Brown: The 11th KFC (Karl Fulves Convention) will be held this year on Saturday 18th July from 1pm at The Sir John Oldcastle pub, 29–35 Farringdon Road, London EC1M 3JF on the corner of Farringdon Road and Greville Street. Nearest tube Farringdon station. A five minute walk from International Magic in Clerkenwell Road.

The KFC is a highly informal afternoon set up to honour the most important close-up magician of the 20th century. Attendance is free but you are required to show at least one trick by Fulves from any of his publications. This year promises a few surprises! Magic on the Mersey - Liverpool Town Hall

Magic on the Mersey, the comedy magic show which has entertained thousands of Merseysiders and tourists alike will celebrate its fifth anniversary this summer with a new venue - Liverpool Town Hall.

Steve Price, an award-winning Member of The Magic Circle – the world’s most prestigious magical society – launched Magic on the Mersey just as the country was emerging from Covid restrictions. He had spent much of his career as a leading cruise ship magician, and he describes the move on land as his most challenging year.

“It feels like going full-circle,” says Price. “The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Mary Rasmussen, attended the very first show in August 2021. If you had told me then that five years, and 100 shows, later I’d be bringing it to Liverpool Town Hall, I don’t think I would have believed you.” Having performed on cruise ships and in venues across the globe, Price admits he had no clear roadmap when he created Magic on the Mersey – only determination. “In the early days, it was really, really difficult to get an audience,” he explains. “But as more people came, word-of-mouth took hold – and before I knew it, five years had passed.”

The performances will take place in the atmospheric crypt of Liverpool Town Hall, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience world-class magic in one of the city’s most majestic and historic buildings. Blending expert sleight-of-hand with laugh-out-loud comedy, Price promises an evening of astonishment, connection and unforgettable moments. “My job is to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Magic on the Mersey is a chance to forget the worries of life and be transported to a world where anything is possible. It’s what we all need.”

Graeme is a past winner of family entertainer of the year at Blackpool magic convention, so he certainly knows his stuff!

Etienne Pradier. Hilariously funny, extremely commercial magic with a touch of “oh la laaa” if you haven’t seen him lecture before, you are in for a treat!

Vinny Sagoo. Vinny uses sleight of hand, as well as devilishly clever mathematical principles to create wonderful close up magic that will fool, and entertain you!

Daniel Chard. Daniel is an expert cardician and a busy working pro, he also does a comedy stand up act that can be seen regularly at Smoke and Mirrors in Bristol. A lecture that will have something for everyone.

Jay Adkins. Jay has been collecting Tenyo magic since he was a young child, and has some very rare and extremely fooling pieces. He will be demonstrating and talking all things Tenyo in his lecture. I’ve seen this myself and it is thoroughly enjoyable!

Matt Windsor. Matt has been at the top of the corporate entertainment field for many years, he is resident magician at Manchester United and is known for his pickpocketing skills as well as being a brilliant entertainer. Matt will be teaching some of the techniques he has developed over the years, as well as telling some hilarious (and true) stories. I’ve heard some and they are so funny.
