The Mysterious Gentleman - Cheltenham

"John Nevil Maskelyne was a master magician. His illustrious career began when he exposed charlatan spiritualists in Cheltenham Town Hall. He then went on to create illusions that amazed Victorian audiences, and still astonish people today. But why did he explore dark magic? Were his powers supernatural? And who was the mysterious gentleman in black who convinced him never to dabble in darkness again? This new production uses a combination of stage magic and theatre to tell the story of this Cheltenham born showman." Bristol Day of Magic

Ozzy Dee writes: The Bristol Day of Magic will take place on Sunday 11th May 2014 (put it in your diary!). Denis Behr visits the the UK for the first time in three years, presenting an exclusive lecture, performance and workshop. The highly regarded author of Handcrafted Card Magic, he was awarded Most Valued Participant by the 250 attendees at the legendary Fechters gathering in 2012. He is a charming and technically superb performer, with regular, card-only, one-man shows in Munich. His lecture reveals a modest, highly intelligent, approach to miracle creation; if you are serious about card magic you need to be there. The Bristol Day of Magic is the UK's largest one-day convention offering a great atmosphere, encouraging informal interaction with performers, near perfect close-up viewing conditions and in-depth discussion in small workshops, making this an ideal setting to witness Denis Behr and other great names in. www.bristolmagic.co.uk. Northern Magic Circle Convention, Harrogate

From the organisers: This year's convention is set to be a great one! We are, of course, returning to Harrogate, something for which people have been asking for some time. They have performed in some of the world's most prestigious venues; Michael Jordan, whose profile in the world of entertainment has been growing rapidly since 2007 when at only 16 he was awarded the British Ring Shield for most entertaining act, going on to win the legendary Magic Circle Young Magician of the Year title in 2009; and James Went, who uses his astounding ability at both sleight of hand and mind reading to create a personalised experience that regularly blows the minds of his audiences. You've taken one of the best effects in magic, combined it with the best presentation and added the cleanest handling possible. Can't wait to start working it!" Penn & Teller UK Tour

Penn & Teller will be returning to the UK next year bringing their latest Vegas show to audiences in Manchester, Birmingham, and London writes Ian Westhead in ATVToday: "The production will be starting in Manchester before switching to Birmingham and then finally arriving in London for a mammoth 5 nights at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith. These shows are part of the legendary team’s first ever UK tour. Previous visits to the UK have seen the duo host their own ITV series, and several telly guest spots, however now audiences can see live the action of Penn & Teller’s classic magic tricks performed amid their unique brand of humour and audience participation. Organisers say that no show will be the same and that the audience will never know what will happen on the night. For years Penn & Teller have defied labels – and at times physics and good taste – by redefining the genre of magic and inventing their own very distinct niche in comedy. With sold out runs on Broadway, world tours, Emmy-winning TV specials and hundreds of outrageous appearances on everything from The Royal Variety Performance and Friends to The Simpsons."

Steve Gore Lecture - Newcastle

Steve Gore, known to readers for organising lecture tours, will present his own lecture at various clubs throughout 2014. the lecture will include lots of his original effects such as ‘Trick Photography’, which MagicWeek called “Close-up Trick of the Year” YouTube and “Visions from Vegas”, an ingenious mentalism effect YouTube. Everyone who has seen and purchased this effect has said that they haven't seen a book test, or indeed any effect, using this method. There are effects for Mentalism, Stage, Stand up, Close up and kids too, so there’s something for everyone. The majority of his effects are also easy to master, allowing you to focus on the presentation. “We would certainly recommend him unreservedly to any society looking for an entertaining and totally original session.” Brian Lead, Modern Mystic League. “It was professional in every respect from dress to the presentation of the effects whether they be close-up, stage or children’s magic.” Liz Warlock, British Magical Society.

NOVEMBER 2014

14th, 15th, 16th November

International Magic Convention

Jonathan Pendragon will present his one man show on the Friday night of the International Magic Convention in London on November 14th. The convention organisers write: Not only will Jonathan be performing, but he will also be lecturing both at the main Convention and at the Festival of Magic in the week leading up to the Convention, in a special 'Stage Magic and Illusion Day'.

With three Presidential Galas in Washington D.C., performances for the Queen of England, the Prince of Wales and the Royal Family of Monaco under his belt, it is no surprise that he is the youngest performer to ever receive a Performing Fellowship from the Academy of Magical Arts (the governing body of the Magic Castle). Considered by many as the Master of Grand Illusion Jonathan redefined the art of illusion with a dramatic new style, “Physical Grand Illusion.” This style of Illusion put the emphasis on the physical performance instead of the prop. At a time when magician after magician presented larger and larger illusions on television, some of which were elaborate camera tricks, Jonathan wowed international audiences with illusions based on years of physical training, including dance, gymnastics, and martial arts. He created The Pendragons, an illusion team who were as spectacular in their appearance and movement as anything they presented. Metamorphosis, their most famous illusion, involved a split-second transposition that would have fooled Houdini (the illusion’s inventor), according to the 2005 50th Anniversary Edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

This is an unprecedented chance to see and hear Jonathan talk about some of the groundbreaking illusions he has created and what it takes to create performances that have been seen in at least 14 prime time network television specials in the United States, and on television in approximately 50 countries around the world. As previously announced on MagicWeek, due to limited seating at The Bridewell Theatre, tickets for the Friday night Convention events are now only available as part of a full registration for the whole Convention and registration prices are being kept the same as last year for all events, if you book before March 2nd. This is a great opportunity to enjoy performances and lectures by Tom Mullica, Jonathan Pendragon and many more star names still to be released at a truly affordable rate.
