Magic Show touring exhibition - Cardiff

Chapter, Cardiff (30 July – 12 September). The exhibition brings together 24 visual artists for whom theatrical magic is an important form, intellectually and performatively. Highlights include art-world bad-boys Jake & Dinos Chapman working in collaboration with Derren Brown, and a monumental sculptural illusion by German artist Sinta Werner. In addition, an archival section explores magic's sometimes surprising connections to the world of politics, warfare, marketing and religion, with loans from Eddie Dawes, Paul Kieve, Scott Penrose, Peter Lane, John Fisher, and The Magic Circle Collection. A richly illustrated catalogue contains essays on art and magic by the curators, Jonathan Allen (aka the fictitious gospel magician Tommy Angel) and writer Sally O'Reilly, as well as new writing from Simon During, Brigitte Felderer, Peter Lamont, Pierre Taillefer, Helen Varola and Marina Warner. Sideshow Illusions - Sheffield

You can view Jon Marshall’s restored, original Sideshow Illusions, back by popular demand on Sunday and Monday, 29th and 30th August they are being presented at Sheffield Fayre, Norfolk Heritage Park, Sheffield. Admission is free. This year the shows will include the newly restored Monster Show which features a new version of Robert Harbin’s Invisible Man or Out of this World. The other attractions include Yvette, the Headless Lady - can medical science keep her alive? Visitors can also marvel at Cleo, The Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, a living, tiny, five inch girl and wonder at the statically charged Electra – she’s electrifying!

Many of the shows were debuted at Margate’s Dreamland between 1961 and 1965, they were first exhibited by showman Jon Gresham and they have been restored to full working order by Jon Marshall of Sideshow Illusions working with Pat Gresham, Jon Gresham’s widow expert restored Dave Whatt and a multi-talented team.

This unique collection of original shows, the only working shows from the 50s and 60s in the UK, returns to Margate, from Showzam at Blackpool where Jon Marshall worked with the Professor Vanessa Toulmin of the National Fairground Archive of Sheffield University, to enthral thousands of visitors earlier this year. “This will be a glorious celebration of the Sideshow”, said Jon, “There are so many people who have never seen one, it will be a pleasure to re-introduce them to a new generation. For those older visitors, I know it will evoke many happy memories of a different era and of course they are great fun”.

Also captivating audiences will be Professor Jon's Flea Circus in an amusing recreation of the Victorian and Edwardian Flea shows that were seen in Margate’s Dreamland and many other amusement parks and fairs throughout the UK. www.dippersanddunkers.org.uk www.sideshowillusions.com.

To 19th December

Magic Show touring exhibition - London

Pump House Gallery, London (6 October – 19 December). For a review of 'Magic Show' Click Here.

26th, 27th, 28th November

International Magic Convention - London

First produced by Ron MacMillan in 1972, the International Magic Convention has expanded over the decades, outgrowing a number venues, but returns to last year's excellent venue in November for three days of world-class magic. One of the artistes making their UK convention debut this year is Japan's Ponta the Smith (see www.youtube.com). Beautiful, fluid magic, Ponta the Smith will both lecture and perform (and, because you won't be watching him on YouTube, you'll be able to see what he looks like as well!). The Mermaid Theatre and Convention Complex is right in the heart of London and enjoys stunning views over the River Thames. As always there are a number of different registration options available, for individual, multiple day and evening show tickets. Visit www.internationalmagic.com and for specially negotiated hotel deals Click Here. We'll bring you more convention details over the coming months.
