Cell Escape – The Real Secret, David De-Val. "I extensively researched Houdini’s seemingly supernatural escapes, concentrating for a period on his remarkable jail cell escapes. Many authors have put forward theories. Believe me, none have even come close to the real secret! I personally visited the jail cells in England from which Houdini performed his escapes all those years ago. Their locations were drawn from contemporary newspaper accounts made by the reporters who actually witnessed the stunt being performed. And very detailed they are - most running into many column inches. After four years of almost weekly study, at last I had his closely guarded secret! I set about proving this by duplicating his naked cell escapes at every opportunity..." David De-Val. From the publishers: Here it is: Secrets, photographs, stories, news cuttings. A must for performers and collectors alike. Revised edition A4 book, 78 pages in black and white, and colour. Available via  priced at £40. 3.12.16

The recent Mel Mellers Masterclass held in Essex on 24th November is reviewed by Wyn Jones this week: "There is a train of thought that puts a value to conventions, lectures and courses. That particular way of thinking subscribes to the belief that if you come away with one significant trick/routine/piece of information, it’s value for money. Well I came away with a completely new routine, plus the potential for another, and 2 major improvements for something I do already. More importantly, the tools and mindset to be able to sit down and formulate an original and funny take on anything I put in my act, rather than relying on the stock routine that comes with it that everyone else will be doing. So from me, the course gets a big extending thumbs up." To read the full review Click Here. 3.12.16

Now You See Me is being repeated this evening on Channel 4. "Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo and Isla Fisher star in Louis Letterier's thriller. A year after being clandestinely brought together in New York, four conjurors - street magician J Daniel Atlas, mind-reader and hypnotist Merritt McKinney, escape artist Henley Reeves and sleight-of-hand artist Jack Wilder - are performing as The Four Horsemen in Las Vegas. Their initial show is impressive: a member of the audience is apparently instantly transported to their bank vault and invited to switch on a vacuum machine, which then showers the remainder of the audience in cash. It not only baffles the spectators, it also stumps the police when they discover that the 'robbery' was actually carried out for real. And, as the Horsemen brazenly build upon this first success with a series other inexplicable heists, FBI agent Dylan Rhodes and Interpol's Alma Dray are tasked with tracking the magicians down and finding the evidence to convict them. Director: Louis Leterrier. Magic inspired by David Copperfield. Head magic consultant: David Kwong. Magic consultants: Glen Ghirardi and Jonathan Levit. Special thanks: Chris Kenner, Homer Liwag."
