Number 1168 - Saturday 12th November 2022

The People's Piazza: A History of Covent Garden, Sunday 13th November on BBC 2. From the programme makers: David Olusoga explores the 400-year history of the public space in London's West End, which has been a market, a meeting place and a site of protest, performance and renewal. Telling the story of the piazza from its early years as a playground for the aristocracy, through decline and dereliction to eventual rebirth, the programme weaves archive material with virtual production techniques to bring to life the history of this renowned civic space. Sunday 13th November on BBC 2 see TV Magic for details. [I'm sure this will be of interest to magicians who have performed, or watched magicians performing, in London's Covent Garden over the years. In May, 1662, Pietro Gimonde and his puppet put on a show and entertainers have performed in Covent Garden intermittently ever since. Today it is a top destination for street performers worldwide. Sweet Prediction by Adrian Carratala at Practical Magic. Practical Magic write: Sweet Prediction is a fresh, fun and direct mentalism routine. Enter the stage with a jar full of coloured jelly beans... Spectators will be able to guess exactly how many jelly beans are in the jar.

The jar is always in sight, no one approaches it and nothing enters or leaves it.
Spectators have total freedom to choose whatever numbers they want.
The number is generated in real time and they can change their mind.
The number that they have created together appears on a folded piece of paper inside the jar
The number may be printed in block letters, or as handwritten with a marker pen.

Present this routine on stage for adults, for older children or even through Zoom! The entire audience participates from their seats, without the need to touch the objects and the effect is so powerful and clean that it can close your show! Best of all it is very easy to do! The set includes everything you need so you can start presenting it as soon as you receive the package and an in-depth and easy to follow explanatory video in Spanish with English subtitles.

I know what you are thinking: do you need an assistant? Well, if you have one, they can give you a hand during the routine, but if you don't, you can also present it on your own. The routine is exactly the same: do it with or without an assistant. It all depends on how you prefer to present it. For more info and to order visit

David Penn Lecture  - Kent Magicians Guild, Tuesday 29th November. Mike Ingham writes: The Kent Magicians Guild is very excited to announce that David Penn will be giving his acclaimed lecture on Tuesday 29th November. Please come along and join us at the Stag Theatre, London Road, Sevenoaks TN13 1ZZ. Starts at 8pm. Guests are very welcome at £5.00 per person on the night. Here are some of David's amazing reviews; we look forward to seeing you there.

David Penn is not only recognised as a performer and consultant, he has created some modern classics of Magic including Coinvexed, Mystery Solved, and co-created The 52 to 1 Deck. In his lecture, David reveals the thinking behind his latest inventions with invaluable advice on performance and generating more bookings as a working professional. The lecture has something for every one of all skill levels and was described by Stephen Greenwood of Ace Magicians Club as "The best lecture we have ever had." In The Magic Circular, Ian Rolland describes the experience in an article entitled 'The Perfect Lecture'.

"I recently attended a small lecture that I honestly think bordered on perfection. The lecturer performed plenty of strong practical Magic with many delightful touches of smart thinking and clever innovation. There was something for everyone from close-up to mentalism and stage, from beginner level to advanced. A couple of brief theory sections are worth listening to concerning presentation and Magic as a business, and the whole thing was leavened with plenty of wit, wisdom, and stories. To conclude, the lecturer briefly summed up the merchandise he had for sale (all excellent value) without any tedious hard-sell tactics. The lecturer was David Penn, and if you can get him to lecture at your club or society, you'll be doing everyone a favour. Absolutely first class!". 12.11.22
